Here at Hickory Hill the children’s minds are constantly stimulated. You will be able to see that the school is a structured place that believes in hands on learning, which excels in academics. The low student/teacher ratio enhances the one-on-one help given to each and every child daily allowing the children to grow one day at a time. Hickory Hill School excels in every branch of learning. Each classroom is set up with two computer stations that the children learn and play on daily. The computers are set up for the children to learn basic computer skills, keyboard knowledge, academic achievement, and of course fun games too! Music and movement is always put into the children’s daily. Music and movement is often the children’s favorite part of the day because they are encouraged to express their silliest side as they sing and dance to a variety of children’s songs. Each classroom at Hickory Hill is center based allowing each child to maneuver around the classroom in a circular motion to each center. Some of the centers at the school include a rice/water table, math manipulative, writing, library, reading, building station, Kitchen/Housekeeping and an art center.
With respect to language skill development, Teachers are constantly talking with the children about their play providing a language rich environment. All centers will be labeled with pictures and words. As the children mature, they move from the concrete to pictures to letter and word recognition. Moreover, there will be writing materials in many of the learning centers where children begin to recognize the need to write and begin to use this skill at a very elementary level. Last but certainly not least, we hope to teach the children to listen. Listening, a critical component of communication is important to learning and understanding one another. As the teachers listen to the children in an accepting and nurturing manner, children will learn to listen to each other and hopefully to themselves. By learning to listen they learn about their feelings and the complexity of social interactions. By learning to first listen and question with acceptance they can then work on developing a critical capacity to challenge what is said and evaluate the information they receive.
Within the context of the learning center gross and fine motor skills are utilized. Tasks requiring the use of emerging motor skills are constantly presented in the centers as well as outside on our playground.
The New York State certified teachers at Hickory Hill take their jobs very seriously and make it extremely easy for the parents to be involved in their Childs academic experience. The teachers send out a weekly newsletter explaining what your child is working on daily. Each week a main theme is focused on in each class and within that week all academic skills are based around that main theme. The teacher plans many educational lessons as an extension of the main theme.
